The Canon Vixia FS21 is a dual-flash memory camcorder, which for the uninitiated, is a camcorder that uses flash memory instead of traditional mini-DV tapes as a storage medium. [firstpara] It’s great for those who have grown accustomed to the point-and-click record functions of video-capable cellphones, and have no business dealing with tapes.

An important feature of any camcorder is its portability, and thankfully, the light-weight FS21 won’t give your arms a workout. The camcorder boasts excellent ergonomics as well, and adjusts well to fit the hands of anyone but the Incredible Hulk. With a total length of just 212 mm, the camcorder presents no problems when shooting in tight spaces.

Using the FS21’s functions is as simple and easy as recording on your mobile phone. The main dial features just three modes (video capture, playback, and still capture). Place the dial on “video capture,” press the record button and you’re on your way to being the next Carlo J. Caparas. We kid.

The buttons and knobs feature just the right kind of resistance, not too tight, and not too loose either. Also, the camera’s zoom control knob is large enough to successfully utilize even for sausage-fingered people. Speaking of its zoom knob, the FS2’s impressive 37x optical zoom works great for those who’d like to get closer to the action.

With 16 GB of internal memory, the FS21 lets you record over three and a half hours of video using the highest settings and 10 hours using the lowest image settings. Surely, that’s enough storage for you to record your baby’s first steps, isn’t it?

Of course, that’s unless your baby is a freak of nature who can walk a mile the first time he learns to use his limbs. If that is the case, you can always insert an extra SD or SDHC card for extra hours. Be sure to nab an extra battery pack or two though, because the included battery pack only lasts for about two hours.

As for image quality, the FS21 barely passes average. According to, the FS21's video quality is " to be blunt and brutal, is not the best. The FS21's sensor performs well outdoors but suffers big time indoors."

Image noise is immediately apparent even when there seems to be sufficient light. Still, it’s so much better than what camera phones offer, and ultimately would be a great choice for those who want to dabble a little more into the world of video capturing. Or into the world of video scandals. Your choice.
