Huddle up, Pinoy iPhone 5 users! We've got something important to tell you.

Do you know you can now get 4G LTE connectivity on Apple's latest and greatest smartphone? And do you know you can enjoy it absolutely FREE? We're not pulling your leg or pranking you with a very early April Fool's joke! Bitter rivals Globe and Smart have announced just that: free LTE goodness on the latest version of the iPhone. Can't get more legit than that.

Better online video streaming! Sara Polverini says thank you!

But first, why should we be excited? For those who've been camping under a rock, LTE or long-term evolution is the next step after 3G in the mobile web connectivity ladder. It's so freakin' fast it can deliver speeds to the tune of up to 50Mbps and beyond! To put things in better perspective, most household broadband connections today have speeds between 1Mbps and 5Mbps. It's like racing a Ferrari or a Porsche against a second-hand, kakarag-karag first-gen Vios.

Now let your geeky imaginations run wild with the things you can do with it. There's lag-free online gaming, buffer-less YouTube viewing sprees, and, of course, downloading of huge files in just a matter of minutes, to name a few. Check out this little feature we did that shows why LTE is drool-worthy to know more.

Another reason: lag-free online gaming! Hello, sleepless nights!

Now, back at the topic at hand. Free LTE on Globe and Smart? Pwede!

Globe's announcement

According to the folks over at Globe, its iPhone 5 postpaid subscribers "can enjoy blazing mobile internet speeds of up to 42 Mbps in LTE-covered areas without having to upgrade their plans or pay extra charges." You know what that means: It's free if you're tied to a monthly Globe subscription. And how long will this last? We don't know, but since the announcement didn't include any deadlines it looks like this will be good for at least a few months.

Smart's announcment

Smart went on an almost identical route, saying that those on their iPhone 5 postpaid plans with unlimited data "can now get download speeds that are up to 20 times faster than the usual 3G connection on their mobile device.” The telco adds, "users who bought their iPhone 5 bundled with iPhone Plans 999 and 2499 or Unlidata Plans 1500, 2000, and 3000 can automatically use Smart LTE for free until April 30, 2013." There's the difference. While Globe didn't say when the good times will end, Smart already set the date, although it's still a good three months from now. Still a lot of time to maximize the iPhone 5's LTE capability.
