Gamescom 2014, the European version of E3, began on August 14 and ended last August 17 at Cologne, Germany.

Like E3, the annual event, which is now in its sixth year, is a marked date on many a gamer's calendar. This year alone, more than 300,000 gamers, developers and publishers got to roam the event grounds, in search of the next great game to get pumped about.

Unfortunately, we weren't one of those 300,000. But like any good nerd, we made sure to keep a close eye on any announcements and such. And, above all, we made sure our peepers were peeled wide open for the flashy trailers of upcoming games. Below are 13 of the most gamer boner-inducing!

1)   Hellblade
(PS4)

From the guys who brought us action games Heavenly Sword and Enslaved, comes yet another intriguing PlayStation exclusive. The trailer reveals little in way of actual gameplay, but the heroine does remind us of Heavenly Sword's female lead while the creepy mummified thing looks something straight out of Silent Hill.

Release date: TBA

2)   Space Engineers
(Xbox One, PC)

You're an astronaut. But unlike most games where you're an astronaut, there aren't insect-like alien races out to impregnate your intestines. Here you're a space station-building astronaut, dreaming to build the next Death Star. It's like Farmville but in space!

Release date: Alpha version available now on PC, full game TBA

3)   The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter
(PS4, PC)
