Prison Graffiti Photos Are Stunning And Heartbreaking

The beautiful BenCab Museum, owned by National Artist Benedicto Cabrera, boasts an extensive art collection of contemporary works, indigenous objects from the Cordilleras, art pieces from the maestros of Philippine art, and personal works by Cabrera himself. Its vast backyard has a pond with ducks and geese, an organic farm, and a hutÂperfect for just taking in the view. This October, however, one of the galleries in the expansive museum hosts something a little differentâ Rock Ed Philippines founder Gang Badoy Capati's solo show Due Process.

The exhibit features photos of graffiti inside Philippine prisons all taken during her first year of teaching prisonmates in 2007. They were taken sneakily and only with a phone-camera so photographs are mostly out of focus.

Instead of family pictures, they would have their loved ones' names on the wall beside their beds. Others would paint, scribble, or draw on their personal space. "This is their literary work. This is their voice. In the stillness of total darkness, night after night after night, they scratch and scrape and if they're lucky, they draw. So they have something to look at during the day," she recalls through her artist's note.

After checking out the exhibit, visitors are encouraged to share through a guest book what their prison graffiti would say. "Think of what would be written on your wall if you weren't so busy being free," Gang Badoy poses.

Due Process runs until November 12 at the BenCab Museum. There's a forum on Philippine prison volunteer work on November 5, 2 p.m. BenCab Museum is at Km. 6 Asin Road, Tadiangan, Tuba, Benguet.
