Holy Week na, bros! Better stay away from things that are deemed sinful and reflect on the life, suffering, and lessons taught to us by our main man, Jesus Christ!

For some of us, this also means some techie fasting (read: limiting our indulgence on gizmos as a form of penitence). Simply put, technology, like meat, isn’t normally seen as religion’s BFF.

But what if we tell you it shouldn’t be that way always? What if you can actually use tech to have a more fulfilling Semana Santa? Case in point: the apps below that can help you upgrade your Holy Week pagninilay in different ways!

FOR GETTING AROUND FOR THE TRADITIONAL VISITA IGLESIA

The Visita Iglesia is one of the more popular traditions during Holy Week. It involves visiting seven churches in one day and can be a nice bonding sesh for the whole family. The main prob? Pardon the language but getting around can be a b*tch, especially if you're not that familiar with all the churches your lola wants to visit. "Nay, wala naman ata talagang simbahan ni Sta. Korina?"

Google Maps helps you solve this dilemma by showing the routes to the churches via your phone. No need to call on manong tambay for your troubles.

The MMDA also works in a similar way. Plus, it also tells you the traffic situation in major thoroughfares around the metro.

BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO “INTERNATIONAL”

We take pride in the centuries-old churches our country has by the dozen. However, other countries have nice collections as well. Churches of the World will give you a preview of popular churches abroad and the history behind them—potentially useful if you’re planning to make an international version of the Visita Iglesia. Sama kami!

YOUR SMARTPHONE AS A HOLY BOOB-TUBE

TV Maria, a local TV station that serves religious shows, has released an app that will help your smartphone spread the Word of the Lord. Called the TV Maria Philippines app, it will stream the channel’s shows right to your smartphone and tablet as well as update you with the latest church news and upcoming religious events. A good move, we say, since TV Maria is currently not available on free TV.
