Rumor Mill: You Can Unlock The iPhone 8 With A Selfie

The highly anticipated iPhone 8 will reportedly come with a unique feature that allows owners to unlock the smartphone through 3D facial recognition technology.

Citing information from known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple Insider said the 10th anniversary device will be equipped with a front-facing camera that does just that.

Apart from biometrics purposes, the new tech can be used for taking 3D selfies and creating your very own 3D avatar in games. This will be done via the front-facing camera along with additional infrared modules that will take care of the 3D sensing and modeling process.


Kuo’s predictions are corroborated by fellow analyst Rod Hall who told Mac Rumors the same thing.

This new technology is believed to come from Apple’s purchase of augmented reality and technology companies like Metaio and PrimseSense in previous years.

Aside from this, the iPhone 8 is predicted to have an all-glass body featuring an OLED screen. The iconic home button will also be dropped in favor of an edge-to-edge display and wireless charging.
