Looks like the local ultrabook party got a little more interesting as Samsung has just unveiled the spankin' new Series 5 Ultra here in the Philippines. As expected, this one has good looks and innards. However, it also has something that others of its kind don't have, making it a first of sorts in its category. So, what is it? don't worry, you'll find out in a bit.
Samsung isn't a newcomer to the whole thin, light, and powerful range (the Series 9 says hello) but the Series 5 Ultra is widely recognized as the Taiwanese-titan's first ultrabook. It actually comes in two sizes (13-inch and 14-inch) and sports second-generation Intel Core chips. The smaller 13-inch version has a Core i5 proc that's coupled with 4GB of RAM and 500GB of storage (with 16GB SSD). Of course, wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is part of the mix as well together with a USB 3.0 port (2x USB 2.0), a 4-in-1 card reader, Ethernet and webcam. The 13-inch Series 5 Ultra is also one slim device, measuring thinner than 18mm and tipping the scales at just 1.38kg.
The 14-inch version has, aside from larger size, upgraded specs. It comes with a Core i7 chip, a healthy 6GB of memory, 1TB of storage (with 16GB SSD), AMD Radeon HD 7550M graphics, full-size VGA and HDMI ports, wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and the other goodies its smaller sibling has. Now, here's a biggie: the 14-inch Series 5 Ultra is the first and currently the only ultrabook that comes slapped with an ODD (optical disc drive). Nice! But don't let that fool you, this bad boy is still really thin (a requirement for ultrabooks) and light, measuring just 20.9mm thick and weighing 1.84kg.
