Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel to the 13th installment of the series, is now out for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
In the past, such a moment elicited unabashed glee from us. Now, we’ve become a little more disenchanted. In an era that saw the rise of open-ended RPGs like Mass Effect, Skyrim, and Fallout, Final Fantasy’s overall linearity simply became more evident. Suddenly, calling it an RPG felt like a misnomer.
Maybe that’s what went wrong. Maybe we shouldn’t expect it to be something that it really never was, and just enjoy it without thinking how Final Fantasy should be this or that.
As it so happens, Final Fantasy XIII-2 presents a good opportunity to do just that. Let’s check out what’s there to see, so you can decide if it’s worth your time.
