One of this year’s biggest titles for the PlayStation 4 finally has a launch date. In a trailer reveal, Sony announced that the much-awaited reboot of the God of War franchise is coming out this April.
The trailer shows a reformed Kratos, who embarks on a new journey into unfamiliar territory featuring a mountainous Nordic setting. But this time, the Spartan god is not alone. Tagging along is Atreus, his young and eager son who’s also adept in using the bow. Together, this father and son duo will traverse a mysterious land filled with legendary creatures and gods based on Norse mythology.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t like previous God of War titles, which revolved on mindless, yet satisfying hack-and-slash action with a frenzied Kratos at the center of it all. Instead, the game introduces deeper dynamics with Atreus, as Kratos struggles between being a good role model for his son and releasing his pent-up rage at everything that stands in his way.
“There are consequences to killing a god,” Kratos tells Atreus as he tries to come to terms with his past. Either way, it’s going to be interesting to look at how Kratos deals with fatherhood, especially since he sees himself in Atreus, who seems to have inherited his warring ways.
Here’s the 9-minute gameplay trailer that Sony released during the E3 event in 2016.
God of War will be available on April 20 in various versions for the PS4, including a Digital Deluxe, Collector’s and Stone Mason Edition.
