The latest in the esteemed Metal Gear franchise has arrived: Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain.

Series veteran Big Boss returns, and he's back with a vengeance. In last year's prequel, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, Big Boss's military unit was completely decimated as he fell into a comatose. For nine years, he slept. Now, he returns—and has every intention of rooting out the people responsible for his squad's destruction. Set in Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War of the '80s, the game sees Big Boss exacting revenge in a way only he can.

"Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain doesn’t just respect my intelligence as a player, it expects it of me, putting it in a league that few others occupy." - Vince Ingenito for

"Phantom Pain’s story goes from being totally believable one minute (and at times shockingly close to real life events) to the downright unbelievable – yet it still remains gripping at all times. Right from the brilliant prologue section, you will be curious as to what happens next, and just when you think things are starting to be resolved it will take another unexpected turn. It’s fantastic." - Mike Stubbsy for

"Delivering the most realized open-world stealth game to date in addition to the customizability for players to approach every challenge however they see fit, The Phantom Pain not only changes the rules of the Metal Gear Solid series, ultimately altering the trajectory of the franchise, if it does continue, while simultaneously changing the idea of what can be accomplished with an open world game, both narratively and mechanically." - Spencer Campbell for

"When defining the best Metal Gear game, things get trickier, but with The Phantom Pain, that problem is finally resolved. There has never been a game in the series with such depth to its gameplay, or so much volume in content. The best elements from the past games are here, and the new open-world gameplay adds more to love on top." - Peter Brown for

"Hideo Kojima’s original Metal Gear was a top-down, screen-by-screen stealth title. Compared to the massive and ambitious world of The Phantom Pain, it’s hard to believe both games are products of the same creative mind. A series can’t survive this long without evolving, and The Phantom Pain is a testament to the importance of taking risks." - Joe Jhuba for

"It's equal parts tough and flashy, and it's fitting that if this is Kojima's last Metal Gear, he goes out on a high note." - Chris Carter for

"The Phantom Pain is the summation of the shared history of a designer who wanted only to make something other than another sequel and the players who wanted another reason to return to a world he’d sold them on too well. No matter how exciting, offensive, or incoherent some of his turns have been, there has always been something beautifully true to life in his willingness to try." - Michael Thomsen for

"MGSV takes the best of a great series and creates a series’ best in the process." - Kirk McKeand for

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is now available on the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.
