With the likes of Boracay (closure) and Siargao (crowded) becoming less viable summer options, Pinoys are looking for new getaways to beat the heat and hit the beach.

One municipality in La Union is hailed as the "Surfing Capital of the North" for a reason. Around five hours away from the hustle and bustle of the city, San Juan is drawing in more holiday goers with its beautiful beach and rural culture. Considering the restaurant choices and number of activities you can do, a couple of days would be short to maximize a trip to Elyu.

Check in at the popular artist beach hostel and you could either chance upon a quiet spot to recover or come across a jampacked hangout to get sloshed. Flotsam & Jetsam isn't simply the backdrop for the 2015 film of the same name, but sums up the night life in the province. Plus, their Barlic and Meathead pizzas are delicious AF.

Ride the waves, of course

Where: Kahuna Beach Resort

When in La Union, one must grab a board and test the waters? Don't worry. Surf lessons in the area are easier to come by because of the good-natured instructors. Kahuna gives you just that, plus they've got amazing Filipino Balinese style accommodations that have a luxurious vibe.

We almost forgot: you can do all of these without forking out actual cash via the PayMaya QR cashless system. Download the app, add money to your account through its touchpoints, scan the QR code of partner establishments, enter the amount you need to pay, and tap 'Pay' to complete your transactions.
