This year, 2016 treated us to a roller coaster ride of sorts with both the good and bad news overlapping with each other.
However, there were arguably more upsetting incidents that hit the international community, including terrorist attacks, political developments and natural disasters.
Here is a list of sixteen of the most upsetting news stories that made international headlines.
1) Brussels suicide bombings
On March 22, two incidents of coordinated suicide bombings rocked Belgium’s capital city of Brussels.
At least 32 were killed while over 300 were injured after suicide bombers triggered their explosives at the Brussels Airport in Zaventem and the Maalbeek metro station.
2) Ecuador earthquake
This is perhaps the worst natural calamity of 2016.
On April 16, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador 170 kilometers from its capital of Quito. The quake left at least 500 people dead and over 15,000 injured after devastating a large part of the country.
3) Killing of Harambe
On May 28, a three-year-old boy fell into the enclosure of Harambe, a silverback gorilla located at the Cincinnati zoo.
Harambe found the boy and dragged him along the habitat. One of the zoo keepers who feared for the child decided to kill Harambe.
It was later argued by experts that Harambe was actually protecting the boy from the crowd that understandably went hysterical after the boy fell and was dragged by the gorilla.
4) Orlando nightclub shooting
On June 12, security guard Omar Mateen went amuck and started randomly shooting people inside Pulse, a nightclub catering to LGBT clients.
The incident was considered both as a hate crime and one of the worst terrorist attacks in the US, where 49 people were killed while another 53 were injured.
On June 24, Great Britain—in a move that shocked the world—decided to exit the European Union (EU) hence the term “Brexit.”
This was after the country decided to do this via referendum where 52 percent of the votes were in favor for the Brexit after their apparent disappointment with the direction the EU was heading for.
6) Istanbul terror attack
On June 28, a terrorist attack perpetrated by ISIS at the Atatürk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey saw multiple gunmen shooting down civilians and bombing the area.
The attack claimed at least 40 people and injured over 200 others.
7) France truck attack

At least 86 people were killed and over 400 were injured before Bouhlel was gunned down and stopped by responding policemen.
8) Italy earthquake
On August 24, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 rocked central Italy and killed at least 260 people.
Unfortunately, two more earthquakes followed in October with magnitudes of 6.1 and 6.6 that dealt further damage to central Italy.
9) Collateral damage of Duterte’s drug war
On September 16, it was reported that President Rodrigo Duterte’s deadly war on drugs was featured on TIME’s cover.
Currently, there are over 5,000 cases of drug-related killings in the country based on data from the Philippine National Police.
Earlier, The New York Times also featured the war on drugs when there were only around 400 cases of extrajudicial killings.
10) Trump’s victory
On November 9, Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump won the elections against Democrat candidate Hilary Clinton.
The event came as both a shocker and an upset that it triggered pockets of mass protests all over America.
Prior to the win, Trump was facing tremendous criticism over his treatment of women.
11) Marcos internment
On November 18, former president Ferdinand Marcos was finally laid to rest—albeit in a rushed manner pending court technicalities—at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.
This caused public outcry and triggered mass protests throughout the nation, which showed it has not yet forgotten the bloody history of Marcos’ martial rule, where human rights abuses remain unsolved to this day.
12) Colombia plane tragedy
On 28 November, LaMia Flight 2933 crashed in a mountain in Colombia which killed 71 of the 77 passengers on board, most of which were part of a Brazilian football team.
After investigation, it turns out that the pilot did not have enough flying experience to pilot commercial flights but was still allowed to do so.
13) Istanbul bombing
On December 10, Istanbul was once again targeted by a terror attack. This time, the bombing was done in the Besiktas municipality.
A car bomb and suicide bombing killed at least 45 people with 150 others injured in the twin blasts. The sad part here is most of the casualties were police officers who were actually the real target of the attack.
14) Russian ambassador killed
On December 20, the Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov was murdered while attending a public art exhibit in the capital of Ankara.
The long gunman was a 22-year-old cop who shot Karlov in the back and then proceeded to shout “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) while referring to the strife in Aleppo and Syria.
He was later gunned down by responding police officers.
15) ISIS executions
ISIS has always maintained its reputation of terror by conducting numerous recorded executions done in a variety of ways, including beheading, burning alive and drowning to name a few.
On June 8, ISIS once again did the unthinkable by burning 19 Yazidi women whom they took as slaves for refusing to engage them in sexual intercourse.
16) Celebrity deaths
This year seems to be an unlucky one, especially for celebrities as deaths keep on piling up on the 2016 RIP list for famous people.
We all had to say goodbye to someone we adored this year, and these include some of these influential figures that were pillars of their respective industries:
-David Bowie, music industry (January 10)
-Alan Rickman, movie industry (January 14)
-Prince (April 21), music industry
-Muhammad Ali, boxing industry (June 3)
