The Filipino’s sense of humor is well-known worldwide, and our ability to find a funny side in the worst scenarios is a defining trait of the Pinoys. This is probably why 2014 found us LOL-ing in front of our computer screens all year round with the never-ending flood of hilarious memes on social media.
For this year-ender feature, we sifted through all the funny memes that went viral in the past 12 months and rounded up the best of ‘em. Find out which made our list below!
RANDY ORTON RKO VINES

The WWE should definitely be paying a hefty amount in indirect advertising fees to the guy who had the brilliant idea of inserting an RKO-ing Randy Orton in a fail video. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife—you never know when The Viper might show up!

Everyone’s favorite little princess surprisingly made a carb-filled comeback in 2014. Armed with snarky PG-rated humor and an astonishing number of peeled potatoes, it wasn’t surprising that the Sarah Ang Munting Prinsesa memes became a huge hit with all of us. Magbalat na tayo ng patatas!
DILG Sec. Mar Roxas is just trying to do his job as best as he could. Unfortunately, he keeps getting photographed in the most ridiculous situations, making netizens guffaw again and again. There was the time he directed traffic, the time he was shot carrying a sack of rice, and that infamous motorcycle fall, for which he was heavily criticized for not wearing a helmet while en route to Borongan during Typhoon Ruby. Might be better to stay away from photographers next time, Mr. Secretary.

We all expected Manny Pacquiao to win his bouts against Timothy Bradley and Chris Algieri in 2014. What we didn’t expect was that his beloved Mommy Dionisia would steal his spotlight in both events. We started believing in kulam after the Pac-Mom jinxed Bradley last April, while her rosary-waving antics during the Pacquiao-Algieri fight had us chuckling.
NANCY BINAY'S SONA OUTFIT
Sen. Nancy Binay’s SONA outfit definitely wasn’t the most atrocious thing we’ve seen, but it still had us in stitches for weeks after PNoy’s speech. How can we not laugh when the honorable Senator looked like a hot air balloon, a Pokemon, a Datu Puti pack, Princess Fiona, a bunch of spring onions, and an avocado all at the same time?

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago may not look like someone whom you could crack jokes with, but the lady senator has shown us time and time again that she has several tricks up her funny sleeve. In fact, she was actually able to launch a joke book, Stupid is Forever, with all the hilarious quips she came up with. All this while battling Stage 4 cancer!
THE LEGAL WIFE SAMPALAN SCENE

Angel Locsin and Maja Salvador’s sampalan scene in The Legal Wife became a hot topic online after some netizens added hilarious subtitles for comic relief. The Chinese New Year rendition (see above) is particularly hilarious—we’re sure it’ll show up on social media again and again in 2015 and beyond.
THE OSCARS SELFIE

Ellen DeGeneres took group shots to a whole new level with her star-studded “group-fie” during the 2014 Oscars. The selfie-loving Pinoys immediately caught on and started creating their own Oscars selfies, sometimes getting the whole barangay to fit in the frame with the help of a handy selfie stick. The more, the merrier!

We’ve never really been interested in cosmetics up until the #MakeupTransformation trend came about on Instagram. Suddenly, we saw guys and girls morphing into celebrities, cartoon characters, and even objects with costume changes, a few dabs of foundation, and a wacky sense of humor. TV host Paolo Ballesteros takes the cake though for his amazing Instagram transformations, ranging from Frozen’s Elsa to Taylor Swift to an unbelievably accurate Katy Perry.
DALA KA FOODS

Pinoys have a knack for looking at the bright side amidst a tragedy, and this was very clear when the phrase “punta ka sa condo ko, dala ka foods” from the Vhong Navarro-Cedric Lee-Deniece Cornejo debacle that exploded last January found its way to everyday conversation. It quickly became one of the most enduring punchlines of 2014, and we’re still chuckling about it almost a year after the notorious condo incident made headlines.
We sometimes can’t help but channel our inner immature grade schooler when we’re on the winning side of a fight, and this year’s most effective pambabara method is none other than screaming “Boom Panes!” into your rival’s face. When you’re #winning at life, this is the phrase to say.
