Taking into consideration her ballet background and the theme we were about to work with, the crew expected a rather complicated shoot with our February Cover Girl, Dawn Chang.
Complicated in the sense that, while a dancer has the projecting skills of a model, we weren't quite sure how to capture the same grace of a motion-filled performance in stills.
Dawn came into the location exuding that bright aura of a dancer. She didn't even had to twirl to convince us that she was going to make our job a lot easier. Instead of finding her right angles, all we had to do was choose from her many sultry looks.
Fast forward to Dawn putting on toe shoes, we realized that the Pinoy Big Brother finalist was going to execute some painful ballerina moves. She may have already been doing ballet since she was 15, but we imagined it still wouldn't ease the discomfort that comes with ballet-themed poses.
Thankfully, all it took was an intense bout of stretching—which for us, was already excruciating to watch—and a couple of helping hands for Dawn to execute the pointe technique (wherein a ballet dancer puts her entire body weight on just the tips of her toes) for a number of takes.
We actually volunteered to assist but our hands were too dirty...
Other than that, Dawn's FHM debut looked like a dancing queen taking over the dance floor, with photographer Ria Regino of Fat Cat Studio her able choreographer. She grooved to each prepared layout with finesse, sometimes even sharing insights of her own.
Despite the seemingly serious photo shoot though, Dawn knew it wouldn't hurt to let loose a little and have fun.
No wonder the resulting photos resembled a well-choreographed dance number—a performance which didn't even require a high production value and a lot of fuss. The dancer herself and her exquisite moves were more than enough to merit a standing ovation.
Dawn banners our February issue, which also contains thought-provoking features like the gospel of dating according to AlDub; a playlist of the most hilarious local viral videos; the keys to getting women "to sex you"; and the mystery of the subways we almost had.
