After LeBron James, James Harden, and Eric Gordon, it’s Chicago Bulls superstar Derrick Rose who got Filipino NBA fans screaming this past weekend. The 2011 NBA MVP was at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last Sunday afternoon as part of his global D-Rose Tour—a tour made possible by Rose’s shoe engineers, adidas.
The tour is Rose’s way of telling the world that he’s back, done in continent-hopping fashion unlike Jordan’s curter “I’m Back” announcement. Whatever way he does it, it can be argued that fans are excited, especially if the Araneta crowd’s booming response to Rose’s firework-laden entrance was any indication. In between the shooting contests and 3-on-3 exhibition games Rose took part in together with other Filipino celebrities like Isabelle Daza, the Younghusbands, and Chris Tiu to name a few, the occasional M-V-P chants fell his way as well.
After a 17-month layoff caused by an ACL injury, we couldn’t help but ask Derrick this question: “What’s your message to all the basketball-loving Filipino fans that can’t wait for your return?”
He responds: "Thank you for all the support. I appreciate it. And I’m not going to let them down. I know it’s been a long year, and I’m going to try my hardest to win a championship.”
Hell yeah, D-Rose. A hardworking Chicago Bulls team with a healthy D-Rose is only going to make the championship race more exciting.
