Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte has admitted that he owns several bank accounts at the Bank of the Philippine Islands branch at Julia Vargas Ave.
The tough-talking mayor’s move came after apparent proof that he indeed owned the bank account bared by Trillanes went viral on Thursday.
Prior to this, Duterte denied that the BPI bank accounts under his name even existed.
“The account is not true and is just a fabrication of [Trillanes], who is a money for hire… I will not play into their hands by issuing a waiver. The account is nonexistent,” Duterte told the Inquirer.
Just this week, Trillanes stated that Duterte, who claims to be poor compared to other politicians, was hiding some P211 million in a Metro Manila bank account since 2014.
To prove his point, he presented documents showing the alleged payment transfers to the account ranging from P16 to P55 million.
Trillanes also said the P211 million Duterte allegedly owned was not declared in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) in 2014. Possible charges for misdeclaration of the SALN include perjury and violation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards which may result in dismissal from government service.
Duterte is currently the frontrunner among the five presidential candidates in the most recent nationwide survey.
