The incoming Justice secretary of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte's administration has plans to swiftly regain control of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City by employing elite cops to guard the national penitentiary.

Atty. Vitaliano Aguirre revealed that they will replace regular jail guards with around 1,000 troopers from the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF), Philstar reported.

Aguirre said incoming PNP chief Ronald dela Rosa already gave his word that he will commit the needed amount of SAF personnel to the NBP once they both assume their positions.

Meanwhile, the replaced jail personnel will be undergoing rigorous training to redeem Bilibid's tarnished reputation as one of the country's most corrupt institutions.

"All the jail guards, employees' [image] are tainted, so if there is no evidence to file criminal cases against them, there should at least be a re-education, re-training," Atty. Aguirre said.

However, he said that SAF troopers are not immune to corruption so he will impose a staff rotation system to prevent the bribery of personnel.

The NBP has repeatedly made headlines after surprise sporadic raids were conducted by authorities inside the maximum security compound since 2015.

These raids yielded an array of illegal items including guns, drugs, appliances, sex toys, and traces of personalized escort services for big-time inmates.

For his part, Duterte delivered a stern warning to drug lords allegedly operating inside prison amid his campaign promise to put an end to crime within three to six months after he assumes the presidency.
