President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is eyeing to restrain the influence and political powers of the 35 mayors allegedly involved in illegal drug trade within their own cities.
Duterte's first step? Prevent them from selecting their city’s police chief, the Manila Bulletin reported.
“I will not assign to you a chief of police of your choice. I would even amend that law. Sila-sila mismo naglalaro diyan,” he said, referring to Republic Act 8551.
According to Duterte, who has his own fair share of local executive experience as outgoing Davao City top dog, corrupt mayors are usually in cahoots with their city police chief. Preventing them from handpicking their territry's top cop ensures that their influence on illegal drug activities will be drastically reduced.
Duterte added that there will be police officers tasked to gather evidence against erring city rulers.
“We will treat them like ordinary criminals. They committed a crime. I don’t care if you’re a mayor. You were elected using your drug money,” he told the Inquirer.
Duterte won the May polls in a landslide victory that mainly banked on his campaign vow of eradicating crime, particularly drugs within six months of assuming the presidency.
