Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte was apparently not joking when he said during his campaign that he will bring back the death penalty.

In a TV report from GMA News, Digong specifically said that he will push for a death penalty other than lethal injection.

Duterte said that the death penalty will be imposed against heinous crimes like rape and the illegal use of drugs.

“What I would do is urge Congress to restore the death penalty by hanging, especially if you use drugs… Carnapping basta kasali ang homicide,” he said.

He added that our laws would not be effective unless criminals fear the repercussions of their illegal activities.

Capital punishment in the country was suspended when former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed a law that abolished the death penalty in 2006.
