You’ve been to the cinemas over the weekend. Save for a couple of theatres showing the end of the world, it's all New Moon, New Moon, New Moon. [firstpara] You stop and look at the poster and you learn that wow, this is a sequel already! Where have you been hiding? Don’t worry—we feel the same way. Hence, a primer.

What is New Moon?
New Moon is actually the second installment of a four-part vampire romance novels written by Stephenie Meyer. These are the books, in order: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and then Breaking Dawn.

Okay, vampire, romance, four parts?! Hand me the Cliff notes, please.
These books chronicle a star-crossed love story between a teenage girl named Bella and a 108-year-old vampire Edward. Throw in Jacob, a shapeshifting werewolf into the mix, and you’ve got one lousy love triangle…and gazillion swooning women all over the world.

Don’t be too fast discounting this little love affair. The series has sold over 85 million copies worldwide and have been translated into at least 38 different languages.

Ah, so it’s not really a movie.
Twilight was eventually adapted into film in 2008 by Summit Entertainment. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, it grossed more than $382 million worldwide, becoming the biggest vampire movie on record.
