Pinoy athletes truly deserve a pat on the back for being ever-so prominent as of late. [firstpara] In more ways than one, physical wellness and good health are not the only benefits of being physically active.
Take for example, the fact that the more we run or bike, the less fuel we consume, which ultimately leads to more money saved. Being sustainable, even in our mode of transportation, could very well be the key to a more secure lifestyle.
The Firefly Brigade, now on its 12th year, is a citizen’s volunteer action group formed in 1999 to work for clean air and a habitable environment. Yes, they’re merely like most of us, holding jobs of their own but with enough dedication to promote healthy living and environmentally sound practices.
Ortigas and Co. and Firefly Brigade will be having the 12th Tour of the Fireflies, an annual critical mass ride that promotes the bicycle as an alternative and environmentally sensible means of transportation that will help make our cities firefly-friendly once again.
Scheduled this coming Sunday, 18th April 2010, this year’s theme is “I Vote to Bike,” reminding each and every one of us of our right to sustainable transportation.
“Filipinos must be reminded to practice and advocate for non-motorized transportation because it is a form of being makabayan,” explains Ricky Pineda, Firefly Brigade’s long time President. "It means less dependency on fuel which translates to dollar savings for the government.”
Over 8,000 bikers from all over Metro Manila will reportedly gather for this prestigious event, and we sure could not let it take place without us.
The Tour, with start- and end-points at Frontera Verde in Tiendesitas, will pass through Pasig, Quezon City, Marikina, Cainta, Taguig, Makati, and Mandaluyong.
Synchronized bicycle rides in Baguio, Bacolod, Cagayan De Oro, General Santos City, Leyte, Laoag, and Palawan will also kick-off in April 18.
How about we sign up come Sunday and try being a Firefly even for a day, yes?
