The infamous Laglag Bala modus has apparently made a comeback at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Two unsuspecting senior citizens who were supposed to fly to the US allegedly fell victim to the extortion scheme this week.
Salvacion Cortabista and her husband Esteban, both in their seventies were apprehended by airport officials after a bullet was allegedly found in the former’s bag, reported the Manila Bulletin.
The elderly couple denied any knowledge of the .38-caliber bullet found in their possession, saying they had no idea how the bullet got into Salvacion’s bag.
The bullet was apparently detected at the airport's final pre-boarding x-ray scanner.
The couple's daughter, Emy, questioned how her parents’ luggage passed previous x-ray scans without the bullet being detected. Despite their contestation, the elderly couple were not allowed to board their flight as authorities were still investigating the incident.
The Laglag Bala scheme made headlines last year after numerous victims, including foreigners, complained of allegedly being extorted money by airport personnel.
