We Filipinos are generally very respectful people, which make it sort of difficult to be funny at times. We want to get along with others so much that it forces us to watch what we say, even if we're hella angry (read: plastikan).
Enter memes and webcomics filled with puns and sarcasm that do the saying (or screaming) for us minus the guilt (and slap to the face). For instance, there's...
Cyanide & Happiness
Poorly Drawn Lines
Did you get that "spring" joke? Neither did we. Anyway, the point is it's kind of sad that most of our best verbal jabs are often left unsaid, wasted, and left to rot inside our heads (or sometimes translated into passive-aggressive posts on social media). Stress!
With that in mind, we'd like to introduce you to a new local webcomic that aims to fill that void, Libreng Komiks. Created back in April by Eugene "Toto" Madayag—the man behind the popular Kolsenter Komiks on Tumblr—Libreng Komiks is a free, Facebook-based comic strip that captures the angry-slash-irritated Pinoy vibe through angsty but very relatable humor.
LK shows us that letting go of that pent-up urge to condemn that out-of-tune karaoke-singing neighbor for having the gall to sing "Thinking Out Loud" for the 100th time, or maybe calling-out that annoying FB "friend" about his melodramatic #hugot, woe-is-me statuses could actually be funny, and probably better the world (or at least make it less annoying).
Sounds too good to be true? How Pinoy of you to doubt us! Below are five instances Libreng Komiks captured our deepest frustrations about the world in hilarious fashion!
It takes away the "politically correct" filter by letting its characters speak their minds with some crass humor added to the mix.
It pokes fun at social conventions we have that make little to no sense.
While majority of the webcomic’s topics are about everyday slice-of-life scenarios, it also occasionally comments on politics and current events.
Even local celebrities and their quirks are not safe...
Overall, its simplistic style compliments its fun and easy-to-get humor.
Libreng Komiks has been on a steady rise to semi-viral fame with almost 20,000 likes in its Facebook page as of this writing. Not bad for something just around three months old.
Got a minute? Why don’t you drop by their Facebook page and get your free dose of Pinoy humor. You won't regret it!
