It’s been almost two months since strife-torn Marawi City was finally declared liberated from the grasp of local ISIS terrorists, but it looks like the martial rule, which was earlier declared in Mindanao due to the crisis will be in effect for much longer.
Upon the request of President Rodrigo Duterte, Congress convened in a joint session on Wednesday to vote on extending martial law. There, our lawmakers voted 240-27, (Senate 14-4, Lower House 226-23) in favor of the extension until December 31, 2018.
The initial 60-day Mindanao martial law was first declared on May 23, 2017 due to what was then all-out clashes between our government troops and the Maute group in Marawi City. It then got extended until the end of the year through a special joint session conducted by Congress in July.
