A two-day nationwide transport strike starts today, Monday, October 16, 2017.
Several transport and labor groups from all over the country are holding the strike to protest the plan to phaseout jeepneys starting January next year.
“President Rodrigo Duterte has not only rejected our demand to junk the previous Aquino administration's PUJ (Public Utility Jeepney) phaseout program, he is now even rushing its implementation to complete the monopoly takeover of our livelihood by his big business cronies and foreign auto industry giants” Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) George San Mateo said in an interview with CNN Philippines.
In the planned PUJ phaseout program, drivers and operators must purchase at least 20 new e-jeepneys, which costs more than P1.5 million each. The units will be controlled by transport companies, and fare collection will be done through the use of Beep cards, which are being used in the country's train systems.
According to Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), the program will negatively affect the livelihood of drivers and operators nationwide, as the PUJs will be solely controlled by foreign and big corporations.
