The Commission of Human Rights (CHR), an independent agency tasked to uphold each Filipino’s dignity, was rendered literally worthless after the House of Representatives gave it a P1,000 working budget for 2018.
At least 119 lawmakers from the Lower House were in favor of the measly budget for the CHR while only 32 voted against it.
The meager allocation is a far cry from the CHR’s proposed 2018 budget, which stands at P678 million and has already been approved by the Senate finance committee.
In response to this, several Senators vowed to reverse the Lower House’s decision.
But the CHR is not alone in its dilemma since the Lower House also gave P1,000 budgets to the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
