More than anything, Filipinos find the fun in pursuing unconventional world records ranging by the numbers. Countless public paloozas come to mind.

Sunday, October 17, 2010,  saw perhaps the most ambitious one to date, courtesy of the Mentos Fresh Burst Geyser World Record Blow Up.

The objective is simple – our country attempts to break the world record for the largest simultaneous soda geysers held in one single location, which in our case is the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.

Students coming from RTU, JRU, PUP, Adamson University, and UP Diliman attended and took part in establishing a world record that aims to crack Mexico’s previous effort of 2,000 soda geysers in one event.

A soda geyser is the main draw in a series of Coke and Mentos experiments being conducted by Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz of the entertainment company Eepybird.

It’s simple, really – open the bottle, drop the Mentos, and marvel as the soda explodes.

There isn’t much science behind it either, but rather just the act of nucleation – the soda fountain is created when a physical reaction between the soda and the sugar from the candy is made.

“There are hundreds of thousands of bumps [in one Mentos], meaning there are hundreds and thousands of places for bubbles to grab onto. All the fizz is released, and all that power comes shooting out of the bottle,” says Grobe.

For the folks who participated in this world record attempt, the result was spectacular: an open landscape surrounded by thousands of Coca-Cola bottles sprouting soda like a fountain,  sprouting so high,  onlookers thought fireworks were being made.

Finally, a new world record was achieved, with 2,850 bottles popped to perfection, trumping Mexico's previous record by an easy margin.

Those who wished they joined in on the fun need not worry - the guys from Eepybird are strongly encouraging you to "do try this at home."
