CNN names their ten Heroes of 2009 and among them is Filipino Efren Penaflorida. A select panel of judges comprised of Retired General Colin Powel, Ted Turner, Whoopi Goldberg and Sir Elton John, among others, chose Penaflorida—or Kuya F! as his students fondly call him—for his efforts to alleviate violence and illiteracy with his Dynamic Teen Company. So far, DTC has taught basic reading and writing to about 1,500 kids on the road with pushcarts as their classrooms.
Along with the honor of being one of the Ten Heroes is a cash prize of $25,000, to be awarded in November, at a star-studded gala hosted by none other than Anderson Cooper. Class ain’t it? But here’s the thing: Of the ten, one will be named CNN Hero of the Year. The distinction comes with $100,000 cash prize. You can actually participate and join in naming CNN Hero of the Year by voting for your chosen one via www.cnn.com/Heroes. So yeah, you can actually vote for Efren.
