Here we go again...

As if the whole "Terror De Manila" brouhaha isn't messy enough, a brilliant pitch to solve the much-talked about predicament came out last week:

WHY DON'T WE JUST TURN THE RIZAL MONUMENT AROUND?

Yes. You read that right. The smart-ass public official who came up with that brilliant idea is His Most Honorable Amado Bagatsing (representative of the 5th District of Manila), who broached the idea during a July 1 congressional hearing on Metro Manila development.

And mind you, Bagatsing didn't just haphazardly think of his proposal. He was ready with the perfect argument for the quick fix he had in mind:

"Buti pa 'yung kalabaw [the carabao statue in Rizal Park], nakaharap sa siyudad. Bakit si Rizal, nakatalikod?"

Bagatsing points out that Rizal's monument, which is facing the sea, should be turned towards metropolitan Manila, for its current position supposedly encourages the Spaniards' stance back then to shoot our national hero at the back for being a traitor. "To me, Rizal is a national hero. He should not be classified as a traitor," he added.

Strong words, sir. But you can't hide the fact that your plan also means that we are going to alter a national historical site that's been around since 1913, and that WE ARE GOING TO KEEP THAT DARNED BUILDING.

That said, since we're on the subject of inane ideas, here's a better one:

Anyway, what really riles us up is how sometimes our public officials blurt out the most outrageous statement and acts like it's the most incredible idea in the world. Whether it's because of the pressure of the situation, or they are simply oblivious to what their not-so-bright quotes imply, no one wants to be remembered by that one disastrous slip of the tongue.

Take for example the trapos politicos below, supposedly respectable men who may want to think of saltier spiels to totally erase from public consciousness their most head-scratching remarks!
