On August 21, the 34th death anniversary of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, more than a thousand protesters marched to the People Power Monument in Quezon City to condemn the Duterte administration's bloody war on drugs. This parallelism is not lost on us as it was Ninoy's death that eventually led to the revolution against Ferdinand Marcos' regime and compelled people to peacefully protest along EDSA in 1986.

It may have been a rainy evening, but this didn't stop the crowd from airing their grievances especially after 17-year-old Kian Delos Santos was killed in the hands of the police in Caloocan City. Witnesses and CCTV footage claimed that the Grade 11 student was unlawfully executed. One testimony even said that Delos Santos' last words were "Tama na po. May test pa ako bukas," as he tried to plead for his life. But the men in uniform justified what they did and said that the boy who was in boxer shorts at the time of the incidentâwas wieldingÂa .45 gun and two sachets of shabu.

Wearing black and bearing candles at the historic monument, protesters carried their placards that bear words which the government and the nation should really start paying attention to. We round up some of them.
