Was Rob Schneider ever this funny?
Rob Schneider, the star of early 2000s comedy movies Deuce Bigalow, Hot Chick and The Animal, was in Manila last Monday, October 28, 2013. Did he have a new movie to promote? Is there a third Deuce Bigalow movie coming out? No. If you've been on the website lately, you might have heard that Adam Sandler's favorite cameo man was in town to do stand-up comedy within the posh walls of Solaire in Pasay.
It's not commonly known but stand-up comedy is how Schneider got his first big break. He was initially scouted by Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels in the late '80s in an HBO comedy special. Schneider was then brought in to the show as a writer first before he eventually became a full-time cast member. Later on, Schneider would use his talent for physical comedy and for playing exaggerated character sketches for his film roles.
Attached to Rob's name as well is another SNL alum, Adam Sandler, who regularly puts the half-Filipino comedian in memorable bit roles. The most famous? That one in the 1998 underdog sports comedy flick, Waterboy, where he eggs Sandler on in the movie's ending sequence with the immortal Schneider words, "You can do it!"
About 15 years after those four words were screamed out with Rob's hormonal gusto, Rob Schneider is here in Manila, on a stage at a huge room in Solaire. We are watching from the back portion, extremely curious about Rob The Comic. Tonight, he is the last man standing after Filipino stand-up comedians from comic group Comedy Manila, Alex Calleja and Mike Unse, warmed up the crowd.
One of Rob's first lines: "I am 49 years old now. I don't know how that happened." Today, he has advanced in age even more as he celebrated his 50th birthday last October 31. But back to the topic at hand. We—like Rob himself—couldn't believe that he's 49.
Has it been that fast?
If the crowd's reaction were any indication, it couldn't have been a day since he debuted in Waterboy. Just a few moments after his remark on his age, a woman who probably had a little to drink, shouted out those famous lines: "You can do it! Yeaaaaaaaaahh!" To the delight of the crowd, and to the non-surprise of Rob who responded, "Well, that didn't take long."
