We've seen quite a few famous people dumping a bucketload of ice on their heads lately. What's up with that, right?

It's called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Here's Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg:

So, what is it exactly? The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a form of awareness campaign and fundraiser for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is a neurodegenerative disorder which causes rapidly progressive severe muscle weakness that can ultimately result to loss of control over all voluntary movement and even death. In other words, it can render your body physically useless.

So what does pouring ice cold water on your head have to do about it? Well, when you happen to be nominated for the challenge, you have to do the deed in 24 hours. Failure to comply means you have to donate to a charitable institution that focuses on ALS. In other words, you have to literally chill out in exchange for not parting with your moolah. However, it seems like most participants both took the challenge and donated. Good job, guys!

You can also nominate other people (usually two to three) before you take on the task.

The origin of dumping ice and water on one's head is not clear. Apparently, people have been freezing their brains off for different kinds of charitable purposes even before the year started. However, according to Time, the current trend started when Chris Kennedy, an American golfer, took the challenge. On July 14, he recorded himself dumping ice water on his head. He then donated $100 (around P4,400) to an ALS charity, and the rest is viral video history.

Since then, the Ice Bucket Challenge has made it bigso big in fact that ALS foundations have reported raising millions of dollars. It's also been done by big name celebs, from the likes of Bill Gates to Vin Diesel and beyond.

For us mere mortals who have no celebrity status but want to freeze our heads in the name of charity, there are ways to make the deal more awesome. However, let's not forget that this is also for a noble purpose. So it's much better if we donate and show off our cold soaked selves on cam. There are several ALS charities that take donations, but the biggest one that also happens to be in the center of the Ice Bucket Challenge is the ALS Association.
