Director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film trilogy is one of the most commercially and critically successful comic book film franchises in recent history.

Combined, the three films grossed nearly 2.5 billion dollars worldwide, with Spider-Man 3 (2007) being the highest earner at 890 million dollars.

Only Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008) grossed higher at over a billion dollars in this particular genre of comic book adaptations.

The films, specifically Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004) received very positive reviews, while the third enjoyed a lukewarm reception.

In early 2010, it was announced that the franchise will be undergoing a reboot, with a new director in Mark Webb of 500 Days of Summer fame, and a completely new cast.

The said film is said to be, wait for it, “gritty” and “contemporary,” much like the modern Batman film series. We just hope that “gritty” won’t mean that Peter Parker will be speaking in an incredibly hoarse voice that we’ll have trouble understanding.

What we can be excited about though is that Hollywood is abuzz with rumors about the new potential Mary Jane, Emma Stone. Popular celebrity blog, perezhilton.com, reports that Sony Pictures Entertainment has offered the role to the young actress, who the blog deemed was perfect for the role because of her wit, talent and beauty.

And we tend to agree. The actress has played memorable roles in comedy films Superbad (2007), The House Bunny (2008), Zombieland (2009), and the more recent Easy A (2010). She is a certified hottie as well, having landed a spot in the 100 Sexiest List of FHM U.S., and various other men’s publications.

Kirsten Dunst, the former Mary Jane Watson, once stole our hearts as she nailed the role of the sweet, girl-next-door girlfriend of our favorite web-slinging hero. So rest assured, it’s not going to be easy to fill Mary Jane’s shoes. If we’d put our money on someone though, we’d be confident enough in the bubbly yet sexy charms of one Emma Stone.
