Times have been tough for OPM as the Internet has opened up a worldwide battle for the ears of Filipino music lovers. The death of FM stations supporting homegrown talent certainly hasn’t helped. And the weekly arrival of foreign bands, entertainers, and TV idols from foreign lands has only made for far less breathing space for amazing local musicians.

Like a doctor telling his patient, “weeks, not months,” so goes the local music expert’s diagnosis: OPM is dying. Is it or is it not? We’ll leave that question to those who like to debate.

Meanwhile, we’ll most likely be busy checking out the Tanduay Rhum Rock Fest, the country’s biggest and loudest nationwide rock tour, all set to happen this coming Friday, October 26 at SM MOA.

Now on its 6th year, the event once again aims to deliver the best of local music on one stage. And they’re definitely going to make a lot of noise. A massive ensemble of all-Filipino bands—30 to be exact—will be joining this year’s concert. Among them: Ebe Dancel, Session Road, Typecast, Siakol, Dong Abay, The Dawn, Radioactive Sago Project, Franco, Up Dharma Down, and Sandwich.

The Tanduay First Five squad—Urbandub, Kamikazee, Parokya ni Edgar, Rico Blanco, and Wolfgang—will be performing too, and will also be performing in 22 other cities across the land on different dates. For this Friday at least, there can be no doubt that OPM is well and alive.

Chito Miranda of Parokya Ni Edgar sums it up best: “It brings the band closer to the fans. It gives us the change to play Pinoy music all over the country. Bands like us live for live gigs and there is no better way to promote Pinoy music. Watching or hearing someone singing on TV or on the radio is nothing compared to actually seeing the artists perform their original songs live. Tanduay does that for us, for the fans, and for the local music scene.”

So how do you get in? Two bottles of Tanduay Rhum 5 Years 750ml and one bottle of Tanduay Light 750ml gets you a VIP ticket.
