Have you ever had an epiphany—maybe after a good, long meal—about really trivial things you've never thought about? Like, what are those tiny, germ-like creatures floating in mid-air (which we answered here)? Or what's the real color of the universe?
You know, if we take the bright stars, planets, and all the other colorful cosmic entities and combine it in one huge cosmos palette, what color would it be? Blue? Red? A rainbow-colored spectrum maybe?
Apparently, back in 2001 scientists had too much time on their hands gathered to investigate this (not-so-life-changing) question that can really help astronomers learn more about the stars. So they surveyed the redshifts of light that reached out to over 200,000 galaxies and averaged its wavelengths in order to get a composite idea of the true color of the universe.
They came out with this answer:
Yes, they have determined that we live in a turquoise green-colored universe. Kind of minty, don't you think? Which is also pretty cool, right? (Pardon the pun.)
But then they noticed that though they arrived at the correct calculations, the software they had use to render the universe's color had a slight problem with reading the white-balance, giving them a skewed result.
Good news if you're a proud Atenean or just simply hate the minty color, because after a thorough re-examination, the corrected and true color of the universe now looks like this:
It's a shade of pastel. It's beige. And it's pretty lifeless. Hey, geniuses, where are all the trippy colors that comprise the cosmos?!

Believe us or not, astronomers have decided to call the universe's official color as "Cosmic Latte." Well, that sounds better than "Galactic Beige."
