A 21-year-old mechanical engineering student from the University of the Philippines (UP) has invented an agricultural device that has the potential to bring wonders to the country's abundant corn farming industry.

Rosette Sabiniano, who originally hails from San Jose City in Nueva Ecija, created a mechanical corn planter that drastically reduces the time it takes for the whole corn planting process.

"Based on my results, the equipment is 14 times faster than the method of planting applied today, so, I think, that speaks for it," she told GMA News.

In one of her tests, Sabiniano recalled that her device took only seven minutes to finish planting corn compared to the manual method which usually consumes an hour and 47 minutes.

She revealed the secret to the speed: her invention's ability to do the three basic stages of corn planting all in one motion.

In manual labor, soil furrowing, seed dropping and seed covering are done in separate and tedious steps. Sabiniano's brainchild, which is made of metal and galvanized iron tubes, takes care of all that at the push of a button.

According to her, she wanted to create something that was both cheap and would increase the efficiency of corn farmers.

"Sa nakikita ko kasi ngayon sa Pilipinas, yung mga equipment na available ay pang-maramihan, pang-malakihang sakahan. Pero nakakalimutan yata natin na large percentage ng mga magsasaka sa Pilipinas ay mahihirap. Maliliit lang sinasaka nila at hindi nila afford yung pino-produce na equipment," she said, adding, "My main goal here is to help the poor farmers."

Sabiniano is planning to get in touch with the Department of Agriculture after she graduates for the possible mass production of her device, which won second place at this year's UP College of Engineering undergraduate competition.
