Today marks the declaration of Camarines Sur third district Representative Leni Robredo as the running mate of presidential candidate, former Department of Interior Local and Government secretary Mar Roxas in the 2016 National Elections.
Initially reluctant to run for vice president because of her daughters and her personal assessment of being less qualified, Leni eventually took on the challenge, saying that her late husband, DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo, would've also heeded such a call.
Watch her acceptance speech here:
While some parts of her acceptance speech reeked Liberal Party (in all of its pa-deep glory), we all know that Leni puts what she preaches into practice. Able to step out of her deceased partner's shadow, the pro bono lawyer carried on with Jesse's reforms and came up with some of her own, and brought forth action in their province.
The only question is, will she be able to translate her platform on the national level?
Still, whatever the outcome of her VP run may be, there are what we call "Robredo qualities" we wish Leni wouldn't let go.
If Jesse has his tsinelas leadership, you could call his widow's "Biyahe ni Leni," referring to that one time she was photographed waiting for a provincial bus by her lonesome. (You could seriously include us in your campaign team, Ma'am.)
Constituents are dismissing Leni's humility as commonplace, though being able to keep her feet on the ground only means that she is conscious of priorities and knows proper allocation.
A person's modest ways aren't enough to be identified as a good public official. Leni integrated her being meek to involvement in her community. She coordinates regularly with those under her, not missing a beat to hear her people out.
Check out the congresswoman's Facebook account and what you'll see is a gallery of district meetings and functions.
Sec. Jesse is known for having a close-knit family. With the padre de pamilya having already passed on, Leni made sure her daughters wouldn't be devoid of care, all while ably tending to those who need her. It is that motherly love that has enabled her to perceive the true needs of Bicolanos.
Win or lose, we're sure Leni will still do the right thing, no matter what position she'll end up in when all's said and done.
