Unlike other upstarts who made a name by flashing their face on TV and print, you made yours by concealing it under strands of hair. How’s that?
At the time I was awkward and hesitant, kasi pag artista even without saying anything, you can express kung galit ka o masaya ka. It was really challenging for me na naka-cover yung mata ko. So I exaggerated my hand gestures.
And the formula did work, apparently.
Yes, because of my bangs, nagkaron ako ng trademark. When you say Let’s Go, bangs agad yung naaalala ng tao—“yung girl na naka-cover yung face.”
Why do you think it was so?
At the time usung-uso yung rock bands; maraming students na nagpalagay din ng bangs. It was flattering nung nalaman ko yun, na nagkakaron ng impact yung show because of my bangs. Naging controversial siya kasi hindi nila alam yung totoo kong itsura. Sabi nila, ano kayang itsura nung Bangs? Siguro kirat siya, siguro may malaking peklat yun sa kanang mata, or something like that. Natatawa na lang ako.
And, boy, were the cynics surprised!
Ha ha! Because of that pa nga, maraming bumibisita sa aking viewers sa studio taping just to see my real face in person. Kaya thankful din ako kina Direk Bobot Mortiz, sa writer and staff ng Let’s Go.
Do you think things would’ve been the same if your bangs were, say, styled ala bowl-cut?
Ha ha ha! I’ve had that actually. Kasi I joined Close Up to Fame before, and that’s how they styled my hair.
