Interview: Chris Mooney, FHM UK

The iconic captain on his wheels, what gets his blood boiling, and what's on his iPod

So here we are in your very own David Beckham Academy—tell us what it’s all about.
I’m really happy with it. It’s something that has been my dream for years now. I wanted somewhere where kids can come down and learn football. It’s not something just for kids with ability, it’s based around kids coming down, having fun, getting off the streets, and enjoying themselves,

Where did you first kick a ball around as a kid?
I was brought up on Hackney Marshes and the pitches all over East London. I’ve got a lot of great memories from my Sunday League time as a kid, for my team, Ridgeway Rovers.

What’s your favorite motor in your oversized garage?
Probably the Bentley. It’s not the Continental GT, it’s the Arnage-T. It’s really slick.

Nice wheels! You’ve been out in Spain a while now. What do you miss the most about England?
I miss my family, I miss my friends, I miss the English way of life. But I’m over there to be honest. I’m playing for one of the biggest teams, if not the biggest team in the world. My whole family’s happy and I’m really enjoying it.

And you also seem a lot more relaxed these days…
I think that when things are good off the pitch, they’re good on the pitch. I know Madrid hasn’t won anything, but I think playing with this team and playing with these players gives you a buzz and when you play in a capacity crowd of 80,000 every Saturday, it doesn’t get any better than that.

So what are you most looking forward to in World Cup Germany? What’s getting the blood boiling?
It’s being with the squad and the players. I think the banter around this team is the best I’ve ever been involved in. The whole occasion of being involved in a World Cup finals, with the spirit and the fans and everything we’ve got back home. To be in a World Cup is something I’m always going to remember.

What are the most played tunes on the David Beckham iPod at the moment?
Probably Mary J. Blige’s new album. And Chris Brown, I listen to that a lot. The new Kanye West one as well, and the new Notorious B.I.G one that’s just come out.

You haven’t got into La Bamba yet?
No. What’s that?

What’s that? It’s the greatest Spanish song ever!
Haven’t heard that, but there are some good artists in Spain. Shakira’s good and Alessandro Sanz, I like him.

Do you think this could be your last World Cup?
Well, people keep saying that to me, and it may well be, but I’d like to play the next one in South Africa. I want to keep playing as long as I can, so if it is, it is, but we’ll have to see.
