After months of waiting, a new Miss Universe was finally crowned in Las Vegas following the grueling contest preparations that saw over 90 gorgeous candidates from all over the world give it their all in the prestigious pageant.

The 22-year-old Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who represented South Africa, emerged on top and was crowned by outgoing Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere.

Beyond the glitz and glamour, there’s actually a ton of things that make Demi-Leigh’s win all the more special. Check out these fun facts about the new Miss Universe:

She’s like Pia

Like our very own Miss Universe 2015 winner Pia Wurtzbach, Demi-Leigh made her people proud by ending a title drought that lasted 39 years. She’s also just the second South African to take home the coveted title after Margaret Gardiner was crowned queen way back in 1978.

She’s a model

With her killer smile and toned body, we wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Demi-Leigh moonlights as a model for a company called Boss Models and Vision Management. But you can’t call her just another pretty face since she also earned a degree in business management at the North-West University.

She’s friends with Miss Universe-Philippines Rachel Peters

The two Peters apparently hit it off during the earlier stages of the pageant by enjoying some sweets with some hilarious twinning selfies.

She has 4 loving parents

Talk about solid backup. Demi-Leigh doesn’t have just two, but actually four loving parents to lean on. Despite remarrying, it’s good to know that her biological parents and their respective partners gave their full support that helped motivate the beauty queen to make her dreams come true.

She’s an advocate of self-defense

Earlier this year, Demi-Leigh unfortunately experienced getting held at gunpoint after she won the Miss Universe-South Africa title. This traumatic incident triggered her to promote self-defense, especially for the females in her country. “I think the important thing is to know that we all have things as humans that we go through. It's okay not to have a perfect life and it's okay to have emotions and to have feelings,” she said.

She’s a bookworm

It might be easy to misjudge her as the type who shies away from books, but the truth is actually quite the contrary. Demi-Leigh loves novels and recently finished reading The Alchemist by Paulo Cohello.

Her sister serves as her inspiration

Demi-Leigh was proud to share that her ultimate inspiration is her 10-year-old half-sister, Fraje, a child with special needs who was born without a cerebellum. “She is my biggest motivator in life and she has the most beautiful lashes any girl can dream of,” she said.

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without some sizzling photos of Demi-Leigh, so we checked out her IG and found some eye-popping photos of the new Miss Universe:

Congratulations once again, Demi-Leigh!
