For the second year in a row, Manila will be home to the nerdy nirvana that is AsiaPop Comicon Here’s a taste of some of things you can look forward to this weekend.
But first, look, a Pikachu truck!
Marvel fans, assemble! This Sunday (August 28, at around 12:30 p.m.), at the second floor main stage, true believers will get a taste of what’s to come in the Marvel universe. You’ll be able to watch a Doctor Strange clip (that has never been seen outside of San Diego Comic Con, by the way) plus, some other extras from their web and television series. Oh, and only the first 1,000 people will be able to enter the super-secret room, so you better line up and get your ticket, stat.
2) The Merchandise
Your EQ will be greatly tested as you walk through the halls, where stalls are neatly lined up and beckoning you to dispense of your hard-earned cash. Unfortunately, APCC does not fall on a payday weekend so you better hope that you have enough saved up. With all the discounts and exclusives (like Comicave Studios’ Captain America 75th Anniversary Tribute Statue, 1/12 Scale Bronze Replica) that’ll make ya wanna throw money like they do in a hip-hop video. #MoMoneyMoProblems
3) Because Comics
If you’re an aspiring comic book artist, you’re gonna love the panel held by Jason Palmer, Whilce Portacio, Ken Lashley, Billy Tan, and Mike Zeck. You can also turn your beloved comics (buti pa sila, palaging nandiyan) into collectible items by asking one of the many comic book guests to sign.
4) Cosplay, Cosplay, Everywhere!
Where else can everybody and their grandma rep their faves? After all, creating cosplays is the sincerest form of fandom flattery. Expect a lot of jittery Winona Ryder wannabes and make-believe mutants wandering around the area. There’s also gonna be a cosplay competition called CAGE which rewards winners with cold, hard American cash.
5) Art Appreciation Time
Visit the artist’s alley where local creatives are selling their fan art wares.
6) Wrasslin’ + Jedi Warriors and Sith Lords = So Much Win
Philippine Wrestling Revolution (known for their cool, campy matches) and Fightsaber Philippines (who perform lightsaber choreography) take center stage!
7) Pinoy Pride
Admit it! Don’t we usually take pride in anything that’s remotely Filipino or Filipino-inspired? Then, support local and check out the cast of Heneral Luna and fan film Avengers Vs Justice League: Death of a Hero.
8) It’s High Noon!
Brace yourselves for a dose of aggro gaming and amusingly salty behavior as APCC holds an eSports tournament this weekend. The featured video games are Street Fighter V, NBA 2K16, League of Legends, Dota 2, and Overwatch. Game on!
9) The Celebs
Meet-and-greet, autograph signing, and interviews with celebs? Like who? Hmm…let’s see. There’s Nicholas Hoult from Skins, X-Men, and Mad Max: Fury Road, plus Joe Dempsie who plays the forever-rowing-his-damn-boat Gendry and is also from Skins. The Vampire Diaries/The Originals fans get to meet the lovely Claire Holt. Oh, and did we mention Millie Bobby Brown A.K.A. Eleven from Stranger Things?
We’re gonna do y’all a solid and share the sched for their interview panels (for the peeps too lazy to search):
Saturday (August 27)
Millie Bobby Brown: 1:30pm – 2:00pm
Claire Holt: 6:00pm-6:45pm
Sunday (August 28)
Joe Dempsie: 11:30am - 11:15am
Nicholas Hoult: 4:00pm - 4:45pm
10) *Ahem* The Guest Cosplayers
With CAGE cosplay competition judges like Riki LeCotey A.K.A. Riddle, who rocked her Black Cat costume, and Yugana Senshi Uon, who came dressed as a genderbent Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, you’ll want to hightail it to the venue. (Get in line at the autograph booth guys, ’cause there’s a lot of fanboys waiting for them)
11) Maria Ozawa Autograph Signing + Meet And Greet
Happening this Saturday. ’Nuff said.
12) Victoria Court Booth
For the first time this year, Victoria Court holds, well, court at SMX for APCC. No, they won’t be providing private rooms for geeky quickies but they’ll be selling merchandise and food. Yes, you read the last part right. Aside from the themed rooms, VC’s pretty known for their munchies, too.
