2016 was a very memorable year for Jessy Mendiola. It was when she was hailed as the Sexiest Woman in the Philippines.
The Kapamilya actress garnered over half a million votes (589,792 to be exact), unseating Jennylyn Mercado as the Country’s Finest.
It was also during that year when the 25-year-old star graced the magazine’s cover for the very first time.
Amidst all the negative comments, trolls, and bashers, Jessy was unshaken. Endorsements and projects came her way. Her Instagram followers kept on rising. She was a star and no one could stop her.
But along the way, the pessimism of people took a toll on her, that she started hating herself.
In an Instagram post, Jessy revealed her feelings after winning the Sexiest Woman tag.
“When I won FHM’s sexiest woman in 2016, I thought... finally, people appreciate my efforts and my body,” she shares. “But when people started pointing out my flaws, I started hating myself, at times even thinking I was a bad person for having ‘thunder thighs’.”
She adds: “I didn’t even want to be seen on TV anymore, I started turning down roles and it affected my work.”
But just like the strong and sexy woman that she is, Jessy turned her breakdowns into breakthroughs. All that bashing served as her motivation to put herself back on track. Now, her aim is to serve as an inspiration for everyone.
“Then I realized, why should I feel so bad about myself when I loved myself even before I was called ‘sexiest.’ I thought of myself as sexy, strong and beautiful in my own way. I started building myself up again despite what other people say (until now they call me names) and have lost 15 lbs. since,” she says.
"I may not be the sexiest for others, but I am sexy and beautiful for myself, that alone is enough."
