Gee Canlas wants to break the mold of sexy comediennes. However, that idea could be difficult to grasp, with her traipsing around in the GMA sitcom A1 Ko Sa ‘Yo in scant clothing. In it, Gee gets candid and funny with equally captivating actresses while playing the role of an ex-overseas entertainer from Japan. But the actress' thespian flair is always on point, adding depth to what could have easily been a bit character.

“With A1, the challenge is not in pulling off the sexy-funny role,” says Gee. “Everyone takes care of how they look. Madali na makitang sexy ka o maganda ka. The real challenge is having real chops in comedy.”

Luckily, Gee is covered in that department. She’s a big fan of Tina Fey and Saturday Night Live, and she’s managed by the same group that handles comediennes Tuesday Vargas and Valeen Montenegro. She's even dubbed for comedy queen Eugene Domingo in Kimmy Dora.

“I draw inspiration from them when it comes to my craft,” says Gee.

But her natural ability to tickle your funny bone comes from something more personal, though.

“I’m the girl who always has to prove herself first before people notice me. Looking back, I’ve learned how to embrace my uniqueness as a woman and as an artist. I was the ugly duckling; the small, dark kid. So I [challenged] myself to try and be good at what I do.”

And good comedy is what she does best in her one-woman online show Gee TV (look it up: www.!). There, she pokes fun at millennial concerns such as communication problems and relationship dynamics.

“It’s self-deprecating because all Gee TV episodes are based on my personal experiences,” she says. “And I think it’s funny to other people because it’s relatable.”

Now, if you think a funny guy like you may have a future with Gee, fair warning—Gee says that a guy has to be street-smart to catch her attention.

“And to be that, you have to have seen many things, have met a lot of people...gusto ko yung mataba ang utak para witty banter can happen between the two of us.”

“I may be funny, but I am an alpha female. I can take a guy na alpha rin...yung kaya akong basagin sa kalokohan at katatawanan.”
