What is your New Year's resolution? Get ripped? Be maporma? Quit something? Start something?
While there's nothing wrong about focusing on the things you want to do to make yourself a better you, it's also smart to consider the things your girlfriend wants you to change—especially if you are dead serious about your relationship.
It's not that there's something wrong with you. It's just that every relationship—even the seemingly perfect ones—have room to grow and flourish. And while we can be better every day, there's no better time to turn into, well, Mr. Better than the start of the year.
1) Take her with you during boys' night out
Fine, this isn't completely a good idea. But if you like to gain her full trust, let her experience your barkada's inuman session even once. Just so you know her imagination gets pretty absurd every time you ask permission to go out with your friends, and the only way to put an end to it is to let her see what you are truly doing. She'll surely enjoy, love you for it, and be a little less tight the next time you ask for her permission to booze.
2) Make an effort to be close with her girl friends
No matter how maarte your girlfriend's BFFs are, you need to get along with them. Perhaps you can pay for their dinner (or merienda if you don't have enough budget)? That way, when your relationship turns southward, you can count on the BFFs to NOT be completely against you. They'll have some good memories of you, and they'll tell your (seemingly soon-to-be-ex) GF that "Hey, he wasn't that bad." Sometimes, that could be enough to save your relationship.
3) Actually listen to her
Eliminate that "Makinig sa isang tenga, ilabas sa kabilang tenga," habit of yours. Don't just attempt to appear like you're listening; instead, let your brain really absorb what she's saying. When she talks, put down your phone, tune everything out, and absorb the info. That way, you can actually reply with something that turns the conversation into a more stimulating one.
4) Realize that sometimes the reason you're buying her all these gifts is that you're overcompensating for the lack of you in her life.
It's trite but it's true. She really likes this gift: time. While it's nice to eat at fancy restaurants, watch movies, and go shopping, there's no need to spend every dime you earn on her. Slow things down, and go for a quiet, meaningful cuddle. Do it enough, and she'll be a happy lass.
5) Surprise her even on normal days
You don't have to send her a bouquet of roses or buy a box of chocolates to make her feel kilig. A simple "I love you, ganda!" written on a sticky note or a pack of Choc-Nut can make her feel really special.
6) Let her know how you truly feel
Fine, you don't want drama but whether you like it or not, it's part of a relationship. If there's something that is bugging you, tell her. Don't vent your frustrations to your tropa. They might make you feel better now, but you'll definitely be bothered again the next day. No one else can fix your relationship, but you two. Just go directly to her and tell her. You're only prolonging the agony if you don't. Confront what needs to be confronted.
7) Be an impeccably groomed man
It's okay to actually take care of yourself now, you brute. Don't be lazy.
8) Get along with her family
We're in the Philippines, so family is a crucial element in any relationship. You can't go Bonnie and Clyde here, and expect her to be happy. Like with her BFFs, get on her family's good side. You'll never know when you'll need their help when she's acting extra bratty.
9) Be sweeter…on social media
Don't annoy people by constantly posting couple photos. But do let a simple declaration of love here and there. It's okay, bro. Express your love. Don't over-express, but most of all, don't under-express.
10) Maybe be more honest?
Maybe you've been pretty honest with her all this time. She trusts you after all. But think of honesty as a skill: It has to be constantly honed. Don't let the blade of truthfulness dull. Keep it sharp. This year, it's another chance to make it even sharper.
Say it with us: "Walang sikretong hindi nabubunyag."
Just ask Steve Harvey. He made a mistake, and he was pretty honest. It did turn out fine in the end. Right, Steve?
