"Ako'y halimaw sa laro... (Mala Abueva!)"
The opening part, which doubles as chorus, fully encapsulates this hip-hop homage to Calvin Abueva that we just discovered. Written by Jefferson Buenviaje aka "Third Flo'" and produced by Klumcee, "Mala Abueva" is as good as any rap song about basketball players (Drake's "0-100/The Catch Up," Kanye West's "Clique"), only this one reference "The Beast" that is Abueva.

With verses such as "Walang pake kahit sa sahig lumagapak," and "Hindi si Jordan pero mala-Rodman ang karakas," the tribute track fittingly epitomizes the PBA-Gilas Pilipinas superstar and his rabid style of play. "Mala Abueva" has been around for some time now, but just gained traction when Third Flo' had the chance to his more than meet his idol recently.
So, what's the story behind this basketball banger?
Buenviaje shared in a Facebook post that he penned the song after watching Abueva's Kuwentong Gilas documentary: "Na-inspire ako sa kanya, sa mga pagsubok na pinagdaanan niya sa buhay—bale-balentong, walang-wala, pero nabuhay gamit ang talentong meron siya."
What about The Beast did Third Flo' find most impressive? "Sa kabila ng lahat, di siya nagpatinag. Lumaban, ginamit ang puso, nagpursigi. Ngayon, nakatungtong siya sa laro na gusto niya, at gumawa ng sariling pangalan."
He definitely didn't expect for "Mala Abueva" to blow up, saying he only followed what his heart and mind had told him in coming up with the single. And when the opportunity to share the stage with his hardwood hero presented itself during the Rap is Life VIVA LOKAL event at B-Side Makati (on his birthday, no less), Third Flo' not only grabbed, but killed it.
"Nakakatuwang isipin na nakilala at nakausap ko siya nung binisita niya ako sa mismong kaarawan ko," he wrote. "Doon pa lang, sulit lahat ng pagod at hirap ko sa loob ng 15 years na pagra-rap."
Third Flo' still can't believe that he was able to perform "Mala Abueva" with Calvin himself, saying, "Napakalaking karangalan, habambuhay ko itong ipagmamalaki. Pinakamagandang birthday." As for his favorite player, The Beast will try to emulate the hype song, as the Alaska Aces attempt to even its best-of-three quarterfinal series with the NLEX Road Warriors tomorrow.
