Tom Hardy has finally made his first official appearance as Venom, the iconic Spider-Man anti-hero. During the Brazil Comic-Con, director Ruben Fleischer (Gangster Squad, Zombieland) first presented fans with an exclusive look at the Venom movie set in San Francisco.
Of course, this wouldn’t be complete without Tom Hardy, who plays the titular role. He wasn’t able to attend the event, but he did deliver a promise to fans via live satellite. “I just want to say that I give you my word of honor that I’m going to do everything I can to deliver the best Venom that I possibly can muster,” he said.
The film is reportedly slated for an October 2018 release but as this date nears, more questions about the latest comic book character turned on-screen hero start popping up.
Here are some Venom mysteries we want answered:
Who’s Venom’s villain?
The first thing that usually comes to mind when thinking of Venom is that he’s one of the primary villains in the Spider-Man series. But now that he’s the focus of the film, we want to know whether there’s going to be some kind of role reversal with Spider-Man now becoming the “villain” of Venom’s movie.
Who’s going to play Spider-Man?
It’s quite difficult to pull off a Venom story without involving Spider-Man. At some point, the friendly neighborhood crawler is expected to swing by, even if just for a quick cameo. The question though is who will don the blue and red underoos? The most logical choice for Sony right now is obviously Tom Holland, the actor who currently portrays Spider-Man. But nothing is finalized yet so this means that Andrew Garfield and perhaps even Tobey Maguire, who both starred in their respective Spidey films, still have a shot at making their Spider-Man comeback.
Will this be part of the MCU?
This is more of wishful thinking on our part since the whole Venom film is apparently a standalone project for Sony alone, but it would be really interesting to see how an anti-hero like Venom, as portrayed by an equally antagonistic Tom Hardy, would fit in with the rest of Marvel’s growing superhero gang.
How will they introduce Venom?
In the comics, Venom’s character was born after the Symbiote, an alien parasitic lifeform that first bonded with Spider-Man, went on to find its next victim in Eddie Brock. So far, the film has yet to drop any hints of how it will tackle Venom’s origin story but it’s probably best not to expect this exhausted narrative getting retold for the nth time since Sony is looking to introduce Venom as an anti-hero who’s independent from Spider-Man.
Will this lead to a Sinister Six movie?
If you weren’t aware, Venom is part of the Sinister Six, a group of Spider-Man baddies just like how the Suicide Squad is to Batman. It’s been done before so we don’t see why Sony won’t give this a go if Venom’s standalone film makes bank.
