Last week, we gave you a sneak peek into the trippy world of Tron with our review of the game Tron: Evolution. Sadly, the game really didn’t excite as much as we thought it would. This week though sees the release of Tron: Legacy, which should be a shoe-in to win the Avatar Award for Visual Achievement in 2010. And yes, we just made up that award.

Set 25 years after the events of the original film, Tron: Legacy follows Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), who in the first film was sucked into the digital world of The Grid. Sam, haunted by the disappearance of his father, searches for clues and eventually finds himself at an arcade hall, which his father used to run.

Suddenly, he’s transported to The Grid, where he takes part in the gladiatorial games that his father had once fought in, in order to escape the system and return to the real world with his father. The challenges become exceedingly more dangerous at every turn, and it’s going to take everything that Sam, Kevin, and the programs Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) have to succeed.

And it’s not just the usual one-on-one basketball challenges, or agawan-base we’re talking about here. We’re talking about racing with hyper-futuristic motorbikes, blasting each other up with tanks, and throwing deadly discs at each other. Because Tron: Legacy is just a sports movie deep inside, minus the high-flying jocks and the head-butting shenanigans of football.
