What does one think of upon hearing “Valentine's Day?” Probably, the parade of romantic couples, flowers, motel discounts, chocolates, red and cheesy stuff, and love. But some might not know the real story behind the said “holiday”: St. Valentine was tortured, beaten, stoned, and decapitated. So the fact is Valentine’s Day has a bloody history, hence the root of the name of one of the most important bands to ever emerge in the early '90s: My Bloody Valentine.

Hailing from Ireland, My Bloody Valentine, pioneered the shoegaze movement along with bands such as Lush, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Quintessential musician Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher sing and play guitars under a massive selection of effects to produce their hazy sound, while bassist Debbie Googe and drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig complete the line-up of this celebrated group.

While the band never really pierced through the mainstream, their last release, 1991's Loveless, is an album that holds its place in the top tier of must-haves for everyone looking for a different sound during those pre-hipster times.

The song below, "Only Shallow," a single off of Loveless, shows the band's '90s grungy inside covered in layers of textured guitars and vocal work that a dark fairy might have come up with.
