Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures have finally released the highly awaited debut trailer for the Pacific Rim: Uprising, featuring the colossal man-made war machines from the future called Jaegers.
The trailer was revealed at the annual New York Comic Con festivities last weekend and by the looks of it, we’re all going to get some good old Kaiju-kicking action when the film hits theaters in early 2018.
The two-minute trailer starts with an epic pre-battle speech from John Boyega, who plays Jake Pentecost, son of the legendary Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) from the first film.
“We were born into a world at war, between the monsters that destroyed our cities and the monsters that we created to stop them," he declares. "We thought we have sacrificed enough, but the war we thought we finished is just beginning and the only thing standing in front of the apocalypse is us.”
So far, it looks like Uprising is going to be all about the Kaiju, Jaegers, and their massive scale battles that will rip through the world’s cities. Here’s a short breakdown of the things we noticed in the trailer:
The Kaiju have evolved
Despite the hefty sacrifices made in the first movie, all those weren’t enough to completely keep the Kaiju away. Now they’re back with a vengeance—bigger, badder, and better. We also get to see more types of Kaiju, with a variety of forms ranging from miniscule to extremely massive.
A new generation of Jaeger pilots led by Boyega's character are going to take over and put a stop to the overwhelming Kaiju invasion. The good news is, their Jaegers are equipped with improved combat arsenal, composed mainly of an electric whip, projectile detection systems, and flying capabilities.
Boyega and the new generation of Jaeger pilots won’t be facing the new Kaiju threat alone. They’ll be guided by fan favorites from the first film like Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), plus the hilarious geek duo formed by Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb (Burn Gorman).
Jaeger vs Jaeger
The action won’t solely be focused on Jaeger-Kaiju fights. Some scenes have already shown that there will also be a handful of Jaeger vs. Jaeger action. We’re just not sure how the last survivors of humanity still have the luxury to fight amongst themselves given that they’re already on the brink of extinction from the renewed Kaiju threat.
Category 6 Kaiju?
Near the end, a humongous Kaiju towers over the four Jaegers as they prepare to engage it in an all-out battle. This monstrous beast looks like it's a Category 5 at the very least (the level of the final Kaiju from the first film), or perhaps the first-ever Category 6 Kaiju the world gets to see. Either way, coordinated team maneuvers will likely play a huge part in this epic showdown of massive proportions.
