Impress her with your love for foreign films

The popularity of torrents and the comfort of watching films at home make women think movie dates are sort of “meh” these days, unless you put “Europe” into the picture. “European movie date” not only sounds more appealing, but it’s more exciting, too.

Thanks to the 15th annual Cine Europa, you can thrill your lady all week-long without exhausting your funds or your stamina. Brought by the folks from the European Union Delegation and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Cine Europa is this year’s biggest foreign film festival. It kicked off last Sept. 6 at the Shangri-La Mall Cineplex, and you and your lady can choose from 25 films, from 17 different countries until Sunday, Sept. 16. The two-week affair screams “great date” all over it, and here are a couple of reasons why you should take her to see it:

1. Cine Europa screenings are free.
Nothing in this world can possibly mask the beautiful ring of the word “free.” Cine Europa screenings are 100-percent costless; you just have to get in line early to secure seats. Think waiting in line sucks? View it as an opportunity to bond. Movies give you something to talk about anyway. It even beats haggling for the P35 deal from your suki at the DVD market in Metrowalk.

2. It can be romantic.
A movie may seem like a sloppy date considering the focus and attention both of you need to invest on the film. But not for a European film. Play on the fact that the continent is romanticized; ask her if she has dreams of visiting a certain European country or if she wants to visit France. If she says yes, take her to see 2 Days In Paris or the corresponding movie from the country she likes. A follow-up statement like “I don’t have the money to take you to France right now, but this is the best I can do,” hopefully seals the deal. If you play your cards right, she might find this the most adorable thing anyone has done. Taking her to the cinemas has never been this potentially romantic.

3. It makes you seem artistic and unpredictable all at the same time.
Women can’t get enough of surprises and new experiences, especially from men with unusual tastes. And saying, “Want to watch a Norwegian film and maybe grab dinner afterwards?” is the easiest and least arrogant way to divulge your hidden cultured self. For a girl to find out you’re into this kind of stuff is like saying you’re into noir jazz or Belgian cuisine without actually saying (or spending for) it. It blows a little whiff of sophistication and mystery on your part, and you can’t go wrong with that. Hell, it sure beats inviting her to watch The Expendables or a re-run of Demolition Man on HBO.

4. It’s like taking her to a buffet for the mind.

If you’re not sure about your lady’s preference, take her to movie buffet that is Cine Europa. Ladies like to have a lot of things to choose from, and this is the perfect date to make her feel like a boss. Watching more than one film seems like you’re investing a lot of time, just make sure you don’t lose your suave charms while and after watching. She’ll definitely want to talk to you about the films, or if you’re lucky, she might invite you over at her place for more “movies.” A good date leaves an impression, but a great date leaves a mark, no matter how expensive or affordable it is. Don’t see yourself as a cheapskate for bringing her to Cine Europa, imagine it as a dreamy theatrical trip all across Europe, from Belgium to Czech Republic, from Italy to Norway via Shang cinemas.

Not from Manila? Catch Cine Europa 15 all over the country on these theaters and dates: Ayala Center, Cebu – Sept. 21 to 24; Liceo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro – Sept. 27 to 30; FDCP Cinemateque, Davao – Oct. 4 to 7; FDCP Cinemateque, Baguio – Oct 14 to 11; FDCP Cinemateque, Iloilo – Oct. 18 to 21
